           Itwasuphillworkforaforeigner,lameorsound,tomakehiswaywiththeBleedingHearts.Inthefirstplace,theywerevaguelypersuadedthateveryforeignerhadaknifeabouthim;inthesecond,theyheldittobeasoundconstitutionalnationalaxiomthatheoughttogohometohisowncountry.Theyneverthoughtofinquiringhowmanyoftheirowncountrymenwouldbereturnedupontheirhandsfromdiverspartsoftheworld,iftheprincipleweregenerallyrecognised;theyconsidereditparticularlyandpeculiarlyBritish.Inthethirdplace,theyhadanotionthatitwasasortofDivinevisitationuponaforeignerthathewasnotanEnglishman,andthatallkindsofcalamitieshappenedtohiscountrybecauseitdidthingsthatEnglanddidnot,anddidnotdothingsthatEnglanddid.
