           Hernextsurprisewastofindhimequallyathiseasewithintheprison;tohearofhispresentinghimselfamongthevisitorsatherfather’sSundaylevee;toseehimarminarmwithaCollegiatefriendabouttheyard;tolearn,fromFame,thathehadgreatlydistinguishedhimselfoneeveningatthesocialclubthathelditsmeetingsintheSnuggery,byaddressingaspeechtothemembersoftheinstitution,singingasong,andtreatingthecompanytofivegallonsofale—reportmadlyaddedabushelofshrimps.TheeffectonMrPlornishofsuchofthesephenomenaashebecameaneye-witnessofinhisfaithfulvisits,madeanimpressiononLittleDorritonlysecondtothatproducedbythephenomenathemselves.Theyseemedtogagandbindhim.Hecouldonlystare,andsometimesweaklymutterthatitwouldn’tbebelieveddownBleedingHeartYardthatthiswasPancks;butheneversaidawordmore,ormadeasignmore,eventoLittleDorrit.MrPanckscrownedhismysteriesbymakinghimselfacquaintedwithTipinsomeunknownmanner,andtakingaSundaysaunterintotheCollegeonthatgentleman’sarm.ThroughouthenevertookanynoticeofLittleDorrit,saveonceortwicewhenhehappenedtocomeclosetoherandtherewasnooneverynear;onwhichoccasions,hesaidinpassing,withafriendlylookandapuffofencouragement,‘Pancksthegipsy—fortune-telling.’

           LittleDorritworkedandstroveasusual,wonderingatallthis,butkeepingherwonder,asshehadfromherearliestyearskeptmanyheavierloads,inherownbreast.Achangehadstolen,andwasstealingyet,overthepatientheart.
