           Now,thatMrMerdlewasalreadyatnolosstodiscovermeansofoccupyingevenhiscapital,andoffullyemployingevenhisactiveandvigorousintellect,Barwellknew:buthewouldventuretosuggestthatthequestionaroseinhismind,whetheronewhohaddeservedlygainedsohighapositionandsoEuropeanareputationdidnotoweit—wewouldnotsaytohimself,butwewouldsaytoSociety,topossesshimselfofsuchinfluencesasthese;andtoexercisethem—wewouldnotsayforhisown,orforhisparty’s,butwewouldsayforSociety’s—benefit.

           MrMerdleagainexpressedhimselfaswhollydevotedtothatobjectofhisconstantconsideration,andBartookhispersuasiveeye-glassupthegrandstaircase.Bishopthencameundesignedlysidlinginthedirectionofthesideboard.

           Surelythegoodsofthisworld,itoccurredinanaccidentalwaytoBishoptoremark,couldscarcelybedirectedintohappierchannelsthanwhentheyaccumulatedunderthemagictouchofthewiseandsagacious,who,whiletheyknewthejustvalueofriches(Bishoptriedheretolookasifhewereratherpoorhimself),wereawareoftheirimportance,judiciouslygovernedandrightlydistributed,tothewelfareofourbrethrenatlarge.

           MrMerdlewithhumilityexpressedhisconvictionthatBishopcouldn’tmeanhim,andwithinconsistencyexpressedhishighgratificationinBishop’sgoodopinion.
