MrsMerdle’sfirsthusbandhadbeenacolonel,underwhoseauspicesthebosomhadenteredintocompetitionwiththesnowsofNorthAmerica,andhadcomeoffatlittledisadvantageinpointofwhiteness,andatnoneinpointofcoldness.Thecolonel’ssonwasMrsMerdle’sonlychild.Hewasofachuckle-headed,high-shoulderedmake,withageneralappearanceofbeing,notsomuchayoungmanasaswelledboy.Hehadgivensofewsignsofreason,thataby-wordwentamonghiscompanionsthathisbrainhadbeenfrozenupinamightyfrostwhichprevailedatStJohn’s,NewBrunswick,attheperiodofhisbirththere,andhadneverthawedfromthathour.Anotherby-wordrepresentedhimashavinginhisinfancy,throughthenegligenceofanurse,fallenoutofahighwindowonhishead,whichhadbeenheardbyresponsiblewitnessestocrack.
