           Notuntilthemorningcametoprotecthimandencouragehim,didshegivehimalastkissandleavethesmallroom.Whenshehadstolendown-stairs,andalongtheemptyyard,andhadcreptuptoherownhighgarret,thesmokelesshousetopsandthedistantcountryhillswerediscernibleoverthewallintheclearmorning.Asshegentlyopenedthewindow,andlookedeastwarddowntheprisonyard,thespikesuponthewallweretippedwithred,thenmadeasullenpurplepatternonthesunasitcameflamingupintotheheavens.Thespikeshadneverlookedsosharpandcruel,northebarssoheavy,northeprisonspacesogloomyandcontracted.Shethoughtofthesunriseonrollingrivers,ofthesunriseonwideseas,ofthesunriseonrichlandscapes,ofthesunriseongreatforestswherethebirdswerewakingandthetreeswererustling;andshelookeddownintothelivinggraveonwhichthesunhadrisen,withherfatherinitthree-and-twentyyears,andsaid,inaburstofsorrowandcompassion,‘No,no,Ihaveneverseenhiminmylife!’
