Duringmanyhoursoftheshortwinterdays,however,whenitwasduskthereearlyintheafternoon,changingdistortionsofherselfinherwheeledchair,ofMrFlintwinchwithhiswryneck,ofMistressAfferycomingandgoing,wouldbethrownuponthehousewallthatwasoverthegateway,andwouldhovertherelikeshadowsfromagreatmagiclantern.Astheroom-riddeninvalidsettledforthenight,thesewouldgraduallydisappear:MistressAffery’smagnifiedshadowalwaysflittingabout,last,untilitfinallyglidedawayintotheair,asthoughshewereoffuponawitchexcursion.Thenthesolitarylightwouldburnunchangingly,untilitburnedpalebeforethedawn,andatlastdiedunderthebreathofMrsAffery,ashershadowdescendedonitfromthewitch-regionofsleep.
Strange,ifthelittlesick-roomfirewereineffectabeaconfire,summoningsomeone,andthatthemostunlikelysomeoneintheworld,tothespotthatmustbecometo.Strange,ifthelittlesick-roomlightwereineffectawatch-light,burninginthatplaceeverynightuntilanappointedeventshouldbewatchedout!Whichofthevastmultitudeoftravellers,underthesunandthestars,climbingthedustyhillsandtoilingalongthewearyplains,journeyingbylandandjourneyingbysea,comingandgoingsostrangely,tomeetandtoactandreactononeanother;whichofthehostmay,withnosuspicionofthejourney’send,betravellingsurelyhither?
