           Clennam,muchaffected,stretchedouthishandtothishonestspirit.

           ‘BeforeItakeit,’saidJohn,lookingatit,withoutcomingfromthedoor,‘guesswhatmessageMissDorritgaveme.’

           Clennamshookhishead.

           ‘“Tellhim,”’repeatedJohn,inadistinct,thoughquaveringvoice,‘“thathisLittleDorritsenthimherundyinglove.”Nowit’sdelivered.HaveIbeenhonourable,sir?’

           ‘Very,very!’

           ‘WillyoutellMissDorritI’vebeenhonourable,sir?’

           ‘Iwillindeed.’

           ‘There’smyhand,sir,’saidJohn,‘andI’llstandbyyouforever!’

           Afteraheartysqueeze,hedisappearedwiththesamecautiouscreakuponthestair,creptshoelessoverthepavementoftheyard,and,lockingthegatesbehindhim,passedoutintothefrontwherehehadlefthisshoes.Ifthesamewayhadbeenpavedwithburningploughshares,itisnotatallimprobablethatJohnwouldhavetraverseditwiththesamedevotion,forthesamepurpose.
