           Physicianwasnotsurprised,handedherintohercarriage,andbadeherGoodNight.Hestoodforamomentathisownhalldoor,lookingsedatelyattheelegantequipageasitrattledaway.Onhisreturnup-stairs,therestoftheguestssoondispersed,andhewasleftalone.Beingagreatreaderofallkindsofliterature(andneveratallapologeticforthatweakness),hesatdowncomfortablytoread.

           Theclockuponhisstudytablepointedtoafewminutesshortoftwelve,whenhisattentionwascalledtoitbyaringingatthedoorbell.Amanofplainhabits,hehadsenthisservantstobedandmustneedsgodowntoopenthedoor.Hewentdown,andtherefoundamanwithouthatorcoat,whoseshirtsleeveswererolleduptighttohisshoulders.Foramoment,hethoughtthemanhadbeenfighting:therather,ashewasmuchagitatedandoutofbreath.Asecondlook,however,showedhimthatthemanwasparticularlyclean,andnototherwisediscomposedastohisdressthanasitansweredthisdescription.

           ‘Icomefromthewarm-baths,sir,roundintheneighbouringstreet.’

           ‘Andwhatisthematteratthewarm-baths?’

           Heputintothephysician’shandascrapofpaper.Physicianlookedatit,andreadhisownnameandaddresswritteninpencil;nothingmore.Helookedcloseratthewriting,lookedattheman,tookhishatfromitspeg,putthekeyofhisdoorinhispocket,andtheyhurriedawaytogether.
