           Whenshefellasleepinthelittlearmchairbythehighfender,theturnkeywouldcoverherwithhispocket-handkerchief;andwhenshesatinitdressingandundressingadollwhichsooncametobeunlikedollsontheothersideofthelock,andtobearahorriblefamilyresemblancetoMrsBangham—hewouldcontemplateherfromthetopofhisstoolwithexceedinggentleness.Witnessingthesethings,thecollegianswouldexpressanopinionthattheturnkey,whowasabachelor,hadbeencutoutbynatureforafamilyman.Buttheturnkeythankedthem,andsaid,‘No,onthewholeitwasenoughtoseeotherpeople’schildrenthere.’

           Atwhatperiodofherearlylifethelittlecreaturebegantoperceivethatitwasnotthehabitofalltheworldtolivelockedupinnarrowyardssurroundedbyhighwallswithspikesatthetop,wouldbeadifficultquestiontosettle.Butshewasavery,verylittlecreatureindeed,whenshehadsomehowgainedtheknowledgethatherclaspofherfather’shandwastobealwaysloosenedatthedoorwhichthegreatkeyopened;andthatwhileherownlightstepswerefreetopassbeyondit,hisfeetmustnevercrossthatline.Apitifulandplaintivelook,withwhichshehadbeguntoregardhimwhenshewasstillextremelyyoung,wasperhapsapartofthisdiscovery.
