Hereandthereseemedmightyriftsinthemountains,throughwhich,asthesunbegantosink,wesawnowandagainthewhitegleamoffallingwater. Oneofmycompanionstouchedmyarmaswesweptroundthebaseofahillandopenedupthelofty,snow-coveredpeakofamountain,whichseemed,aswewoundonourserpentineway,toberightbeforeus.

HereandtherewepassedCszeksandslovaks,allinpicturesqueattire,butInoticedthatgoitrewaspainfullyprevalent. Bytheroadsideweremanycrosses,andaswesweptby,mycompanionsallcrossedthemselves. Hereandtherewasapeasantmanorwomankneelingbeforeashrine,whodidnoteventurnroundasweapproached,butseemedintheself-surrenderofdevotiontohaveneithereyesnorearsfortheouterworld. Thereweremanythingsnewtome. Forinstance,hay-ricksinthetrees,andhereandthereverybeautifulmassesofweepingbirch,theirwhitestemsshininglikesilverthroughthedelicategreenoftheleaves.
Nowandagainwepassedaleiter-wagon—theordinarypeasants’scart—withitslong,snakelikevertebra,calculatedtosuittheinequalitiesoftheroad. Onthisweresuretobeseatedquiteagroupofhomecomingpeasants,theCszekswiththeirwhite,andtheSlovakswiththeircolouredsheepskins,thelattercarryinglance-fashiontheirlongstaves,withaxeatend.
