Inandoutamongstthesegreenhillsofwhattheycallherethe"MittelLand"rantheroad,losingitselfasitsweptroundthegrassycurve,orwasshutoutbythestragglingendsofpinewoods,whichhereandthererandownthehillsidesliketonguesofflame. Theroadwasrugged,butstillweseemedtoflyoveritwithafeverishhaste. Icouldnotunderstandthenwhatthehastemeant,butthedriverwasevidentlybentonlosingnotimeinreachingBorgoPrund. Iwastoldthatthisroadisinsummertimeexcellent,butthatithadnotyetbeenputinorderafterthewintersnows.InthisrespectitisdifferentfromthegeneralrunofroadsintheCarpathians,foritisanoldtraditionthattheyarenottobekeptintoogoodorder. OfoldtheHospadarswouldnotrepairthem,lesttheTurkshouldthinkthattheywerepreparingtobringinforeigntroops,andsohastenthewarwhichwasalwaysreallyatloadingpoint.
BeyondthegreenswellinghillsoftheMittelLandrosemightyslopesofforestuptotheloftysteepsoftheCarpathiansthemselves. Rightandleftofustheytowered,withtheafternoonsunfallingfulluponthemandbringingoutallthegloriouscoloursofthisbeautifulrange, deepblueandpurpleintheshadowsofthepeaks,greenandbrownwheregrassandrockmingled,andanendlessperspectiveofjaggedrockandpointedcrags,tillthesewerethemselveslostinthedistance,wherethesnowypeaksrosegrandly.
