           30September. Igothomeatfiveo’clock,andfoundthatGodalmingandMorrishadnotonlyarrived,buthadalreadystudiedthetranscriptofthevariousdiariesandletterswhichHarkerhadnotyetreturnedfromhisvisittothecarriers’men,ofwhomDr.Hennesseyhadwrittentome. Mrs.Harkergaveusacupoftea,andIcanhonestlysaythat,forthefirsttimesinceIhavelivedinit,thisoldhouseseemedlikehome. Whenwehadfinished,Mrs.Harkersaid, 

           "Dr.Seward,mayIaskafavour? Iwanttoseeyourpatient,Mr.Renfield. Doletmeseehim. Whatyouhavesaidofhiminyourdiaryinterestsmesomuch!" 

           ShelookedsoappealingandsoprettythatIcouldnotrefuseher,andtherewasnopossiblereasonwhyIshould,soItookherwithme. WhenIwentintotheroom,Itoldthemanthataladywouldliketoseehim,towhichhesimplyanswered, "Why?" 

           "Sheisgoingthroughthehouse,andwantstoseeeveryoneinit,"Ianswered. 

           "Oh,verywell,"hesaid,"lethercomein,byallmeans,butjustwaitaminutetillItidyuptheplace." 

           Hismethodoftidyingwaspeculiar,hesimplyswallowedallthefliesandspidersintheboxesbeforeIcouldstophim. Itwasquiteevidentthathefeared,orwasjealousof,someinterference. Whenhehadgotthroughhisdisgustingtask,hesaidcheerfully, "Lettheladycomein,"andsatdownontheedgeofhisbedwithhisheaddown,butwithhiseyelidsraisedsothathecouldseeherassheentered. ForamomentIthoughtthathemighthavesomehomicidalintent.
