           1October. ItwastowardsnoonwhenIwasawakenedbytheProfessorwalkingintomyroom. Hewasmorejollyandcheerfulthanusual,anditisquiteevidentthatlastnight’sworkhashelpedtotakesomeofthebroodingweightoffhismind. 

           Aftergoingovertheadventureofthenighthesuddenlysaid, "Yourpatientinterestsmemuch. MayitbethatwithyouIvisithimthismorning? Orifthatyouaretoooccupy,Icangoaloneifitmaybe. Itisanewexperiencetometofindalunaticwhotalkphilosophy,andreasonsosound." 

           Ihadsomeworktodowhichpressed,soItoldhimthatifhewouldgoaloneIwouldbeglad,asthenIshouldnothavetokeephimwaiting,soIcalledanattendantandgavehimthenecessaryinstructions. BeforetheProfessorlefttheroomIcautionedhimagainstgettinganyfalseimpressionfrommypatient. 

           "But,"heanswered,"Iwanthimtotalkofhimselfandofhisdelusionastoconsuminglivethings. HesaidtoMadamMina,asIseeinyourdiaryofyesterday,thathehadoncehadsuchabelief. Whydoyousmile,friendJohn?" 

           "Excuseme,"Isaid,"buttheanswerishere."Ilaidmyhandonthetypewrittenmatter. "Whenoursaneandlearnedlunaticmadethatverystatementofhowheusedtoconsumelife,hismouthwasactuallynauseouswiththefliesandspiderswhichhehadeatenjustbeforeMrs.Harkerenteredtheroom." 

           VanHelsingsmiledinturn."Good!"hesaid. "Yourmemoryistrue,friendJohn. Ishouldhaveremembered.
