5May.—Imusthavebeenasleep,forcertainlyifIhadbeenfullyawakeImusthavenoticedtheapproachofsucharemarkableplace. Inthegloomthecourtyardlookedofconsiderablesize,andasseveraldarkwaysledfromitundergreatroundarches,itperhapsseemedbiggerthanitreallyis. Ihavenotyetbeenabletoseeitbydaylight.
Whenthecalechestopped,thedriverjumpeddownandheldouthishandtoassistmetoalight. AgainIcouldnotbutnoticehisprodigiousstrength. Hishandactuallyseemedlikeasteelvicethatcouldhavecrushedmineifhehadchosen. Thenhetookmytraps,andplacedthemonthegroundbesidemeasIstoodclosetoagreatdoor,oldandstuddedwithlargeironnails,andsetinaprojectingdoorwayofmassivestone. Icouldseeeveninthedimlightthatthestonewasmassivelycarved,butthatthecarvinghadbeenmuchwornbytimeandweather. AsIstood,thedriverjumpedagainintohisseatandshookthereins. Thehorsesstartedforward,andtrapandalldisappeareddownoneofthedarkopenings.
IstoodinsilencewhereIwas,forIdidnotknowwhattodo.Ofbellorknockertherewasnosign. Throughthesefrowningwallsanddarkwindowopeningsitwasnotlikelythatmyvoicecouldpenetrate. ThetimeIwaitedseemedendless,andIfeltdoubtsandfearscrowdinguponme. WhatsortofplacehadIcometo,andamongwhatkindofpeople? WhatsortofgrimadventurewasitonwhichIhadembarked? Wasthisacustomaryincidentinthelifeofasolicitor’sclerksentouttoexplainthepurchaseofaLondonestatetoaforeigner? Solicitor’sclerk! Minawouldnotlikethat. Solicitor,forjustbeforeleavingLondonIgotwordthatmyexaminationwassuccessful,andIamnowafull-blownsolicitor! IbegantorubmyeyesandpinchmyselftoseeifIwereawake.
