           29September. AfterdinnerIcamewithDr.Sewardtohisstudy. Hebroughtbackthephonographfrommyroom,andItookachair,andarrangedthephonographsothatIcouldtouchitwithoutgettingup,andshowedmehowtostopitincaseIshouldwanttopause. Thenheverythoughtfullytookachair,withhisbacktome,sothatImightbeasfreeaspossible,andbegantoread. Iputtheforkedmetaltomyearsandlistened. 

           WhentheterriblestoryofLucy’sdeath,andallthatfollowed,wasdone,Ilaybackinmychairpowerless. FortunatelyIamnotofafaintingdisposition. WhenDr.Sewardsawmehejumpedupwithahorrifiedexclamation,andhurriedlytakingacasebottlefromthecupboard,gavemesomebrandy,whichinafewminutessomewhatrestoredme. Mybrainwasallinawhirl,andonlythattherecamethroughallthemultitudeofhorrors,theholyrayoflightthatmydearLucywasatlastatpeace,IdonotthinkIcouldhaveborneitwithoutmakingascene. Itisallsowildandmysterious,andstrangethatifIhadnotknownJonathan’sexperienceinTransylvaniaIcouldnothavebelieved. Asitwas,Ididn’tknowwhattobelieve,andsogotoutofmydifficultybyattendingtosomethingelse. Itookthecoveroffmytypewriter,andsaidtoDr.Seward,
