           Astheeveningfellitbegantogetverycold,andthegrowingtwilightseemedtomergeintoonedarkmistinessthegloomofthetrees,oak,beech,andpine,thoughinthevalleyswhichrandeepbetweenthespursofthehills,asweascendedthroughthePass,thedarkfirsstoodouthereandthereagainstthebackgroundoflate-lyingsnow. Sometimes,astheroadwascutthroughthepinewoodsthatseemedinthedarknesstobeclosingdownuponus,greatmassesofgreynesswhichhereandtherebestrewedthetrees,producedapeculiarlyweirdandsolemneffect,whichcarriedonthethoughtsandgrimfanciesengenderedearlierintheevening,whenthefallingsunsetthrewintostrangerelieftheghost-likecloudswhichamongsttheCarpathiansseemtowindceaselesslythroughthevalleys. Sometimesthehillsweresosteepthat,despiteourdriver’shaste,thehorsescouldonlygoslowly. Iwishedtogetdownandwalkupthem,aswedoathome,butthedriverwouldnothearofit. "No,no,"hesaid. "Youmustnotwalkhere.Thedogsaretoofierce." Andthenheadded,withwhatheevidentlymeantforgrimpleasantryforhelookedroundtocatchtheapprovingsmileoftherest"Andyoumayhaveenoughofsuchmattersbeforeyougotosleep." Theonlystophewouldmakewasamoment’spausetolighthislamps. 

           Whenitgrewdarkthereseemedtobesomeexcitementamongstthepassengers,andtheykeptspeakingtohim,oneaftertheother,asthoughurginghimtofurtherspeed. Helashedthehorsesunmercifullywithhislongwhip,andwithwildcriesofencouragementurgedthemontofurtherexertions. ThenthroughthedarknessIcouldseeasortofpatchofgreylightaheadofus,asthoughtherewereacleftinthehills. Theexcitementofthepassengersgrewgreater. Thecrazycoachrockedonitsgreatleathersprings,andswayedlikeaboattossedonastormysea. Ihadtoholdon. Theroadgrewmorelevel,andweappearedtoflyalong.
