           Beingdubiousbecauseofthesmartnessofthecompanyastowhetheritwaspoliticallyorsociallywisetoproclaimopenlytheimportofhiserrand,hechosetoremainsilentforatime,reflectingonthedifferencebetweentheexperiencesofhisearlyyouthandthatofRobertaAldenandtheseothers.NaturallyashesawitamanofthisGriffiths’connectionswouldseektouseagirlofRoberta’sconnectionsthusmeanlyandbrutallyandhopetogetawaywithit.Yet,eagertomakeasmuchprogressashecouldagainstwhateverinimicalfatesmightnowbesethim,hefinallyapproachedBaggott,andmostacidly,yetwithasmuchshowofgenialandappreciativesociabilityashecouldmuster,observed:
