           Andthemomenthewasaloneandthedoorlocked,takingitout,wetandwrinkled,themudoftheshoresofBigBitternstillaboutthelegsyetdecidingperhapsnotperhapshehadbetterkeepitlockedinhisbaguntilnightwhenhecouldbetterdecidewhattodo.Yettyingupinasinglebundle,inordertohavethemlaundered,otheroddsandendshehadwornthatday.And,ashedidso,terribly,sickeninglyconsciousofthemysteryanddramaaswellasthepathosofhislifeallhehadcontactedsincehisarrivalintheeast,howlittlehehadinhisyouth.Howlittlehehadnow,really.ThespaciousnessandgrandeurofthisroomascontrastedwiththeoneheoccupiedinLycurgus.Thestrangenessofhisbeinghereatallafteryesterday.ThebluewatersofthisbrightlakewithoutascontrastedwiththedarkeronesofBigBittern.Andonthegreen-swardthatreachedfromthisbright,strong,ramblinghouse,withitswideverandaandstripedawningstotheshoreofthelakeitself,StuartFinchleyandVioletTaylor,togetherwithFrankHarrietandWynettePhant,inthesmartestofsportclothes,playingtennis,whileBertineandHarleyBaggotttolledintheshadeofastripedmarqueeswing.
