           Theeyesandbacksofoccasionalfrogsthat,uponlichenorvineormoss-coveredstumpsandrottinglogsinthiswarmJuneweather,theresunnedthemselvesapparentlyundisturbed;thespiralsofgnats,thesolitaryflickofasnake’stailasdisturbedbythesuddenapproachofthemachine,onemadeoffintothemuckandthepoisonousgrassesandwater-plantswhichwerethicklyimbeddedinit.

           AndinseeingoneoftheseClyde,forsomereason,hadthoughtoftheaccidentatPassLake.Hedidnotrealizeit,butatthemomenthisownsubconsciousneedwascontemplatingthelonelinessandtheusefulnessattimesofsuchalonespotasthis.Andatonepointitwasthatawier-wier,oneofthesolitarywater-birdsofthisregion,uttereditsoupheandbarghestcry,flyingfromsomewherenearintosomedarkerrecesswithinthewoods.AndatthissounditwasthatClydehadstirrednervouslyandthensatupinthecar.Itwassoverydifferenttoanybird-cryhehadeverheardanywhere.

           "Whatwasthat?"heaskedofHarleyBaggott,whosatnexthim.

           "What?"

           "Why,thatbirdorsomethingthatjustflewawaybacktherejustnow?"

           "Ididn’thearanybird."

           "Gee!Thatwasaqueersound.Itmakesmefeelcreepy."

           Asinterestingandimpressiveasanythingelsetohiminthisalmosttenantlessregionhadbeenthefactthatthereweresomanylonesomelakes,notoneofwhichhehadeverheardofbefore.
