InhisexcitementhewasforgettingthatatonetimeandanotherinthepasthehadindicatedtoRobertathatthestateofhisownparentswasnotwhollyunprosperousandthatifthingsdidnotgojusttohislikinghere,hecouldreturnwestandperhapsfindsomethingtodooutthere.Anditwassomegeneralrecollectionofthisthatnowcausedhertoask:"Couldn’twegoouttoDenverorsomethinglikethat?Wouldn’tyourfatherbewillingtohelpyougetsomethingforatime,anyhow?"
Hertonewasverysoftandpleading,anattempttomakeClydefeelthatthingscouldnotbeasbadashewasimagining.Butthemerementionofhisfatherinconnectionwithallthis—theassumptionthathe,ofallpeople,mightproveanescapefromdrudgeryforthemboth,wasalittletoomuch.Itshowedhowdreadfullyincompletewasherunderstandingofhistruepositioninthisworld.Worse,shewaslookingforhelpfromthatquarter.And,notfindingit,latermightpossiblyreproachhimforthat—whocouldtell—forhisliesinconnectionwithit.Itmadesoveryclearnowthenecessityforfrustrating,ifpossible,andthatatonce,anytendencytowardthisideaofmarriage.Itcouldnotbe—ever.
Andyethowwashetoopposethisideawithsafety,sinceshefeltthatshehadthisclaimonhim—howsaytoheropenlyandcoldlythathecouldnotandwouldnotmarryher?Andunlesshedidsonowshemightthinkitwouldbefairandlegitimateenoughforhertocompelhimtodoso.
