Indeedherbodywasnowtornforthemomentbythemostdesperateandconvulsivesobs,somuchsothatClyde,perplexedandastonishedanddeeplymovedbythissuddendisplayofapent-upandpowerfulemotion,assuddenlywashimselfmoveddeeply.Forobviouslythiswasnotrickorhistrionicbitintendedtoinfluencehim,butratherasuddenandoverwhelmingvisionofherself,ashehimselfcouldsense,asaratherlornandisolatedgirlwithoutfriendsorprospectsasopposedtothoseothersinwhomhewasnowsointerestedandwhohadsomuchmore—everythinginfact.Forbehindherinhervisionlayallthelornanddetachedyearsthathadmarredheryouth,nowsovividbecauseofherrecentvisit.Shewasreallyintenselymoved—overwhelminglyandhelplessly.
