           ButRoberta,herpresentsandherhappylasteveningwithhimputasideinthiscasualway,andforthefirsttime,too,inthisfashion,shookherheadnegatively,asiftosay"Oh,no,"butherspiritswereheavilydepressedandshefelltowonderingwhatthissuddendesertionofheratthistimemightportend.For,uptothistime,Clydehadbeenattentivenessitself,concealinghisrecentcontactwithSondrabehindaveilofpretended,unmodifiedaffectionwhichhad,asyet,beensufficienttodeceiveher.Itmightbetrue,ashesaid,thatanunescapableinvitationhadcomeupwhichnecessitatedallthis.But,oh,thehappyeveningshehadplanned!Andnowtheywouldnotbetogetheragainforthreewholedays.Shegrieveddubiouslyatthefactoryandinherroomafterwards,thinkingthatClydemightatleasthavesuggestedcomingaroundtoherroomlate,afterhisuncle’sdinnerinorderthatshemightgivehimthepresents.Buthiseventualexcusemadethisdaywasthatthedinnerwaslikelytolasttoolate.Hecouldnotbesure.Theyhadtalkedofgoingsomewhereelseafterwards.

           ButmeanwhileClyde,havinggonetotheTrumbulls’,andlatertotheSteeles’,wasflatteredandreassuredbyaseriesofdevelopmentssuchasamonthbeforehewouldnothavedreamedofanticipating.
