           Indeedthehomelifeofwhichthisboyfoundhimselfapartandthevariouscontacts,materialandpsychic,whichthusfarhadbeenhis,didnottendtoconvincehimoftherealityandforceofallthathismotherandfatherseemedsocertainlytobelieveandsay.Rather,theyseemedmoreorlesstroubledintheirlives,atleastmaterially.HisfatherwasalwaysreadingtheBibleandspeakinginmeetingatdifferentplaces,especiallyinthe"mission,"whichheandhismotherconductednotsofarfromthiscorner.Atthesametime,asheunderstoodit,theycollectedmoneyfromvariousinterestedorcharitablyinclinedbusinessmenhereandtherewhoappearedtobelieveinsuchphilanthropicwork.Yetthefamilywasalways"hardup,"neververywellclothed,anddeprivedofmanycomfortsandpleasureswhichseemedcommonenoughtoothers.AndhisfatherandmotherwereconstantlyproclaimingtheloveandmercyandcareofGodforhimandforall.Plainlytherewassomethingwrongsomewhere.Hecouldnotgetitallstraight,butstillhecouldnothelprespectinghismother,awomanwhoseforceandearnestness,aswellashersweetness,appealedtohim.Despitemuchmissionworkandfamilycares,shemanagedtobefairlycheerful,oratleastsustaining,oftendeclaringmostemphatically"Godwillprovide"or"Godwillshowtheway,"especiallyintimesoftoogreatstressaboutfoodorclothes.
