AsClydestood,gazingaboutthelobby,hesawalargecompanyofpeople—somewomenandchildren,butprincipallymenashecouldsee—eitherwalkingorstandingaboutandtalkingoridlinginthechairs,sidebysideoralone.Andinheavilydrapedandrichlyfurnishedalcoveswherewerewriting-tables,newspaperfiles,atelegraphoffice,ahaberdasher’sshop,andaflorist’sstand,wereothergroups.Therewasaconventionofdentistsinthecity,notafewofwhom,withtheirwivesandchildren,weregatheredhere;buttoClyde,whowasnotawareofthisnorofthemethodsandmeaningsofconventions,thiswastheordinary,everydayappearanceofthishotel.
