AndafterdinnerhemadehiswayoutintotheprincipalthoroughfaresofLycurgus,onlytoobservesuchacrowdofnondescriptmill-workersas,judgingthesestreetsbyday,hewouldnothavefanciedswarmedherebynight—girlsandboys,menandwomenofvariousnationalities,andtypes—Americans,Poles,Hungarians,French,English—andforthemostpart—ifnotentirelytouchedwithapeculiarsomething—ignoranceorthicknessofmindorbody,orwithacertainlackoftasteandalertnessordaring,whichseemedtomarkthemoneandallasofthebasementworldwhichhehadseenonlythisafternoon.Yetinsomestreetsandstores,particularlythosenearerWykeagyAvenue,abettertypeofgirlandyoungmanwhomighthavebeenandnodoubtwereofthevariousofficegroupsofthedifferentcompaniesovertheriver—neatandactive.
AndClyde,walkingtoandfro,fromeightuntilten,whenasthoughbypre-arrangement,thecrowdinthemorecongestedstreetsseemedsuddenlytofadeaway,leavingthemquitevacant.AndthroughoutthistimecontrastingitallwithChicagoandKansasCity.(WhatwouldRattererthinkifhecouldseehimnow—hisuncle’sgreathouseandfactory?)Andperhapsbecauseofitssmallness,likingit—theLycurgusHotel,neatandbrightandwithabrisklocallifeseemingtocenteraboutit.Andthepost-officeandahandsomelyspiredchurch,togetherwithanoldandinterestinggraveyard,cheekbyjowlwithanautomobilesalesroom.Andanewmovingpicturetheaterjustaroundthecornerinasidestreet.
