Afternearlyayearandahalfhehaddecidedthatthesearchmusthavelessened,hisownpartinthecrimebeingforgotten,possibly,orbythennotdeemedsufficientlyimportanttopursue—andwhenhewasoncemoremakingamoderatelivingasthedriverofadeliverywagoninChicago,ajobthatpaidhimfifteendollarsaweek,heresolvedthathewouldwritehismother,becausenowhecouldsaythathehadadecentplaceandhadconductedhimselfrespectablyforalongtime,althoughnotunderhisownname.
Andsoatthattime,livinginahallbedroomontheWestSideofChicago—PaulinaStreet—hehadwrittenhismotherthefollowingletter:

AreyoustillinKansasCity?Iwishyouwouldwriteandtellme.Iwouldsoliketohearfromyouagainandtowriteyouagain,too,ifyoureallywantmeto.HonestlyIdo,Ma.Ihavebeensolonelyhere.Onlybecarefulanddon’tletanyoneknowwhereIamyet.Itwon’tdoanygoodandmightdoalotofharmjustwhenIamtryingsohardtogetastartagain.Ididn’tdoanythingwrongthattime,myself.ReallyIdidn’t,althoughthepaperssaidso—justwentalong.ButIwasafraidtheywouldpunishmeforsomethingthatIdidn’tdo.Ijustcouldn’tcomebackthen.Iwasn’ttoblameandthenIwasafraidofwhatyouandfathermightthink.Buttheyinvitedme,Ma.Ididn’ttellhimtogoanyfasterortotakethatcarlikehesaid.Hetookithimselfandinvitedmeandtheotherstogoalong.
