ElviraGriffithsbeforeshehadmarriedAsahadbeennothingbutanignorantfarmgirl,broughtupwithoutmuchthoughtofreligionofanykind.Buthavingfalleninlovewithhim,shehadbecomeinoculatedwiththevirusofEvangelismandproselytizingwhichdominatedhim,andhadfollowedhimgladlyandenthusiasticallyinallofhisventuresandthroughallofhisvagaries.Beingratherflatteredbytheknowledgethatshecouldspeakandsing,herabilitytoswayandpersuadeandcontrolpeoplewiththe"wordofGod,"asshesawit,shehadbecomemoreorlesspleasedwithherselfonthisaccountandsopersuadedtocontinue.
Occasionallyasmallbandofpeoplefollowedthepreacherstotheirmission,orlearningofitsexistencethroughtheirstreetwork,appearedtherelater—thoseoddandmentallydisturbedordistraitsoulswhoaretobefoundineveryplace.AndithadbeenClyde’scompulsorydutythroughouttheyearswhenhecouldnotactforhimselftobeinattendanceatthesevariousmeetings.Andalwayshehadbeenmoreirritatedthanfavorablyinfluencedbythetypesofmenandwomenwhocamehere—mostlymen—down-and-outlaborers,loafers,drunkards,wastrels,thebotchedandhelplesswhoseemedtodriftin,becausetheyhadnootherplacetogo.AndtheywerealwaystestifyingastohowGodorChristorDivineGracehadrescuedthemfromthisorthatpredicament—neverhowtheyhadrescuedanyoneelse.
