AndClyde,feelinghowstrangeitwasthattheReverendMcMillancouldnotconscientiouslybringhimselftodomorethanthatforhim.Howsad.Howhopeless.Wouldnooneeverunderstand—orgivehimcreditforhishuman—ifalltoohumanandperhapswronghungers—yetfromwhichsomanyothers—alongwithhimselfsuffered?
Butworseyet,ifanything,Mrs.Griffiths,becauseofwhattheReverendMcMillanhadsaid—orfailedtosay,inanswertothefinalquestionaskedbyGovernorWaltham—andalthoughsubsequentlyinanswertoaninquiryofherown,hehadrepeatedthestatement,shewasstaggeredbythethoughtthatperhaps,afterall,Clydewasasguiltyasatfirstshehadfeared.Andbecauseofthataskingatonepoint:
"Clyde,ifthereisanythingyouhavenotconfessed,youmustconfessitbeforeyougo."
"IhaveconfessedeverythingtoGodandtoMr.McMillan,Mother.Isn’tthatenough?"
