           Hewouldjustliketositdownsomedayhereorsomewhereandtellhimallandgethimtosayhowreallyguilty,ifatall,hethoughthimtobeandifsoguiltytogethimtoprayforhim.Attimeshefeltsosurethathismother’sandtheRev.DuncanMcMillan’sprayerswoulddohimsomuchmoregoodwiththisGodthananyprayersofhisownwould.Somehowhecouldn’tprayyet.AndattimeshearingMcMillanpray,softlyandmelodiously,hisvoiceenteringthroughthebarsor,readingfromGalatians,Thessalonians,Corinthians,hefeltasthoughhemusttellhimeverything,andsoon.

           Butthedaysgoingbyuntilfinallyonedaysixweeksafterandwhenbecauseofhissilenceinregardtohimself,theRev.DuncanwasbeginningtodespairofeveraffectinghiminanywaytowardhispropercontritionandsalvationaletterornotefromSondra.Itcamethroughthewarden’sofficeandbythehandoftheRev.PrestonGuilford,theProtestantchaplainoftheprison,butwasnotsigned.Itwas,however,ongoodpaper,andbecausetheruleoftheprisonsorequiringhadbeenopenedandread.Nevertheless,onaccountofthenatureofthecontentswhichseemedtoboththewardenandtheRev.Guilfordtobemorecharitableandpunitivethanotherwise,andbecauseplainly,ifnotverifiably,itwasfromthatMissXofreputeornotorietyinconnectionwithhistrial,itwasdecided,afterduedeliberation,thatClydeshouldbepermittedtoreaditeventhatitwasbestthatheshould.Perhapsitwouldproveofvalueasalesson.
