Closeuponthehourofnoonthewholevillagewassuddenlyelectrifiedwiththeghastlynews. Noneedoftheasyetundreamed-oftelegraph; thetaleflewfrommantoman,fromgrouptogroup,fromhousetohouse,withlittlelessthantelegraphicspeed. Ofcoursetheschoolmastergaveholidayforthatafternoon; thetownwouldhavethoughtstrangelyofhimifhehadnot.
Agoryknifehadbeenfoundclosetothemurderedman,andithadbeenrecognizedbysomebodyasbelongingtoMuffPotter—sothestoryran. AnditwassaidthatabelatedcitizenhadcomeuponPotterwashinghimselfinthe"branch"aboutoneortwoo’clockinthemorning,andthatPotterhadatoncesneakedoff —suspiciouscircumstances,especiallythewashingwhichwasnotahabitwithPotter. Thenbothlookedelsewhereatonce,andwonderedifanybodyhadnoticedanythingintheirmutualglance. Buteverybodywastalking,andintentuponthegrislyspectaclebeforethem.
