AfewminuteslaterTomwasintheshoalwaterofthebar,wadingtowardtheIllinoisshore. Beforethedepthreachedhismiddlehewashalf-wayover;thecurrentwouldpermitnomorewading,now,sohestruckoutconfidentlytoswimtheremaininghundredyards. Heswamquarteringupstream,butstillwassweptdownwardratherfasterthanhehadexpected. However,hereachedtheshorefinally,anddriftedalongtillhefoundalowplaceanddrewhimselfout. Heputhishandonhisjacketpocket,foundhispieceofbarksafe,andthenstruckthroughthewoods,followingtheshore,withstreaminggarments.
