           "That’ssothatmurderin’half-breed! I’ddruthertheywasdevilsadernsight. Whatkintheybeupto?" 

           Thewhisperdiedwhollyout,now,forthethreemenhadreachedthegraveandstoodwithinafewfeetoftheboys’hiding-place. 

           "Hereitis,"saidthethirdvoice; andtheownerofitheldthelanternupandrevealedthefaceofyoungDoctorRobinson. 

           PotterandInjunJoewerecarryingahandbarrowwitharopeandacoupleofshovelsonit. Theycastdowntheirloadandbegantoopenthegrave. Thedoctorputthelanternattheheadofthegraveandcameandsatdownwithhisbackagainstoneoftheelmtrees. Hewassoclosetheboyscouldhavetouchedhim. 

           "Hurry,men! "hesaid,inalowvoice; "themoonmightcomeoutatanymoment." 

           Theygrowledaresponseandwentondigging. Forsometimetherewasnonoisebutthegratingsoundofthespadesdischargingtheirfreightofmouldandgravel. Itwasverymonotonous. Finallyaspadestruckuponthecoffinwithadullwoodyaccent,andwithinanotherminuteortwothemenhadhoisteditoutontheground. Theypriedoffthelidwiththeirshovels,gotoutthebodyanddumpeditrudelyontheground. Themoondriftedfrombehindthecloudsandexposedthepallidface. Thebarrowwasgotreadyandthecorpseplacedonit,coveredwithablanket,andboundtoitsplacewiththerope. Pottertookoutalargespring-knifeandcutoffthedanglingendoftheropeandthensaid:
