Thesedespisedthemselves,asbeingthedupesofawilyfraud,aguilefulsnakeinthegrass.
TheprizewasdeliveredtoTomwithasmucheffusionasthesuperintendentcouldpumpupunderthecircumstances; butitlackedsomewhatofthetruegush,forthepoorfellow’sinstincttaughthimthattherewasamysteryherethatcouldnotwellbearthelight,perhaps; itwassimplypreposterousthatthisboyhadwarehousedtwothousandsheavesofScripturalwisdomonhispremises—adozenwouldstrainhiscapacity,withoutadoubt.
