Hewaylaidotherboysastheycame,andwentonbuyingticketsofvariouscolorstenorfifteenminuteslonger. Heenteredthechurch,now,withaswarmofcleanandnoisyboysandgirls,proceededtohisseatandstartedaquarrelwiththefirstboythatcamehandy. Theteacher,agrave,elderlyman,interfered; thenturnedhisbackamomentandTompulledaboy’shairinthenextbench,andwasabsorbedinhisbookwhentheboyturnedaround; stuckapininanotherboy,presently,inordertohearhimsay "Ouch!" andgotanewreprimandfromhisteacher. Tom’swholeclasswereofapattern—restless,noisy,andtroublesome. Whentheycametorecitetheirlessons,notoneofthemknewhisversesperfectly,buthadtobepromptedallalong. However,theyworriedthrough,andeachgothisreward—insmallbluetickets,eachwithapassageofScriptureonit; eachblueticketwaspayfortwoversesoftherecitation. Tenblueticketsequalledaredone,andcouldbeexchangedforit; tenredticketsequalledayellowone; fortenyellowticketsthesuperintendentgaveaveryplainlyboundBible(worthfortycentsinthoseeasytimes)tothepupil.
