WhileTomwaseatinghissupper,andstealingsugarasopportunityoffered, AuntPollyaskedhimquestions thatwerefullofguile,andverydeep—forshewantedtotraphimintodamagingrevealments. Likemanyothersimple-heartedsouls,itwasherpetvanitytobelieveshewasendowedwithatalentfordarkandmysteriousdiplomacy, andshelovedtocontemplatehermosttransparentdevicesasmarvelsoflowcunning. Saidshe:
