           Hewonderedwhatboatitwas,andwhyshedidnotstopatthewharfandthenhedroppedheroutofhismindandputhisattentionuponhisbusiness. Thenightwasgrowingcloudyanddark. Teno’clockcame,andthenoiseofvehiclesceased,scatteredlightsbegantowinkout,allstragglingfoot-passengersdisappeared,thevillagebetookitselftoitsslumbersandleftthesmallwatcheralonewiththesilenceandtheghosts. Eleveno’clockcame,andthetavernlightswereputout; darknesseverywhere,now. Huckwaitedwhatseemedawearylongtime,butnothinghappened. Hisfaithwasweakening. Wasthereanyuse? Wastherereallyanyuse? Whynotgiveitupandturnin?

           Theymoveduptheriverstreetthreeblocks,thenturnedtotheleftupacross-street. Theywentstraightahead,then,untiltheycametothepaththatledupCardiffHill;thistheytook. TheypassedbytheoldWelshman’shouse,half-wayupthehill,withouthesitating,andstillclimbedupward. Good,thoughtHuck,theywillburyitintheoldquarry. Buttheyneverstoppedatthequarry. Theypassedon,upthesummit. Theyplungedintothenarrowpathbetweenthetallsumachbushes,andwereatoncehiddeninthegloom.
