Alittleshamefacedgirllisped, "Maryhadalittlelamb,"etc. ,performedacompassion-inspiringcurtsy,gothermeedofapplause,andsatdownflushedandhappy.
TomSawyersteppedforwardwithconceitedconfidenceandsoaredintotheunquenchableandindestructible "Givemelibertyorgivemedeath"speech,withfinefuryandfranticgesticulation,andbrokedowninthemiddleofit. Aghastlystage-frightseizedhim,hislegsquakedunderhimandhewasliketochoke. True,hehadthemanifestsympathyofthehousebuthehadthehouse’ssilence,too,whichwasevenworsethanitssympathy.
