Thenatoncetheyreachedandhoveredupontheimminentvergeofsleep—butanintrudercame,now,thatwouldnot"down."Itwasconscience. Theybegantofeelavaguefearthattheyhadbeendoingwrongtorunaway;andnexttheythoughtofthestolenmeat,andthentherealtorturecame. Theytriedtoargueitawaybyremindingconsciencethattheyhadpurloinedsweetmeatsandapplesscoresoftimes; butconsciencewasnottobeappeasedbysuchthinplausibilities; itseemedtothem,intheend,thattherewasnogettingaroundthestubbornfactthattakingsweetmeatswasonly"hooking,"whiletakingbaconandhamsandsuchvaluableswasplainsimplestealing—andtherewasacommandagainstthatintheBible. Sotheyinwardlyresolvedthatsolongastheyremainedinthebusiness,theirpiraciesshouldnotagainbesulliedwiththecrimeofstealing. Thenconsciencegrantedatruce,andthesecuriouslyinconsistentpiratesfellpeacefullytosleep.
