           "Lookingbackonthelastfiveyears,doyouthinkitwasworthit?"Iasked.

           Helookedatme,andIsawthathedidnotknowwhatImeant.Iexplained.

           "Yougaveupacomfortablehomeandalifeashappyastheaverage.Youwerefairlyprosperous.YouseemtohavehadarottentimeinParis.Ifyouhadyourtimeoveragainwouldyoudowhatyoudid?"

           "Rather."

           "Doyouknowthatyouhaven’taskedanythingaboutyourwifeandchildren?Doyouneverthinkofthem?"

           "No."

           "Iwishyouweren’tsodamnedmonosyllabic.Haveyouneverhadamoment’sregretforalltheunhappinessyoucausedthem?"

           Hislipsbrokeintoasmile,andheshookhishead.

           "Ishouldhavethoughtsometimesyoucouldn’thelpthinkingofthepast.Idon’tmeanthepastofsevenoreightyearsago,butfurtherbackstill,whenyoufirstmetyourwife,andlovedher,andmarriedher.Don’tyourememberthejoywithwhichyoufirsttookherinyourarms?"

           "Idon’tthinkofthepast.Theonlythingthatmattersistheeverlastingpresent."

           Ithoughtforamomentoverthisreply.Itwasobscure,perhaps,butIthoughtthatIsawdimlyhismeaning.

           "Areyouhappy?"Iasked.

           "Yes.
