           Poorpantaloon,hewasnotanobjecttoexcitelove,butthesmileinhereyeswasaffectionate,anditwaspossiblethatherreserveconcealedaverydeepfeeling.Shewasnottheravishingcreaturethathislove-sickfancysaw,butshehadagravecomeliness.Shewasrathertall,andhergraydress,simpleandquitewell-cut,didnothidethefactthatherfigurewasbeautiful.Itwasafigurethatmighthaveappealedmoretothesculptorthantothecostumier.Herhair,brownandabundant,wasplainlydone,herfacewasverypale,andherfeaturesweregoodwithoutbeingdistinguished.Shehadquietgrayeyes.Shejustmissedbeingbeautiful,andinmissingitwasnotevenpretty.ButwhenStroevespokeofChardinitwasnotwithoutreason,andsheremindedmecuriouslyofthatpleasanthousewifeinhermob-capandapronwhomthegreatpainterhasimmortalised.Icouldimaginehersedatelybusyamongherpotsandpans,makingaritualofherhouseholdduties,sothattheyacquiredamoralsignificance;Ididnotsupposethatshewascleverorcouldeverbeamusing,buttherewassomethinginhergraveintentnesswhichexcitedmyinterest.Herreservewasnotwithoutmystery.IwonderedwhyshehadmarriedDirkStroeve.ThoughshewasEnglish,Icouldnotexactlyplaceher,anditwasnotobviousfromwhatrankinsocietyshesprang,whathadbeenherupbringing,orhowshehadlivedbeforehermarriage.Shewasverysilent,butwhenshespokeitwaswithapleasantvoice,andhermannerswerenatural.
