           Buthowstrangeitwasthatthecreativeinstinctshouldseizeuponthisdullstockbroker,tohisownruin,perhaps,andtothemisfortuneofsuchasweredependentonhim;andyetnostrangerthanthewayinwhichthespiritofGodhasseizedmen,powerfulandrich,pursuingthemwithstubbornvigilancetillatlast,conquered,theyhaveabandonedthejoyoftheworldandtheloveofwomenforthepainfulausteritiesofthecloister.Conversionmaycomeundermanyshapes,anditmaybebroughtaboutinmanyways.Withsomemenitneedsacataclysm,asastonemaybebrokentofragmentsbythefuryofatorrent;butwithsomeitcomesgradually,asastonemaybewornawaybytheceaselessfallofadropofwater.Stricklandhadthedirectnessofthefanaticandtheferocityoftheapostle.
