Thatmustbethestoryofinnumerablecouples,andthepatternoflifeitoffershasahomelygrace.Itremindsyouofaplacidrivulet,meanderingsmoothlythroughgreenpasturesandshadedbypleasanttrees,tillatlastitfallsintothevastysea;buttheseaissocalm,sosilent,soindifferent,thatyouaretroubledsuddenlybyavagueuneasiness.Perhapsitisonlybyakinkinmynature,stronginmeeveninthosedays,thatIfeltinsuchanexistence,theshareofthegreatmajority,somethingamiss.Irecogniseditssocialvalues,Isawitsorderedhappiness,butafeverinmybloodaskedforawildercourse.Thereseemedtomesomethingalarminginsucheasydelights.Inmyheartwasadesiretolivemoredangerously.IwasnotunpreparedforjaggedrocksandtreacherousshoalsifIcouldonlyhavechange—changeandtheexcitementoftheunforeseen.
