           Thoughhewashotfromwalking,heshivered.Therewassomethinghostileintheairwhichmadehimhesitate,andhefeltthatinvisibleforcesbarredhisway.Unseenhandsseemedtodrawhimback.Noonewouldgonearnowtogatherthecocoa-nuts,andtheylayrottingontheground.Everywherewasdesolation.Thebushwasencroaching,anditlookedasthoughverysoontheprimevalforestwouldregainpossessionofthatstripoflandwhichhadbeensnatchedfromitatthecostofsomuchlabour.Hehadthesensationthatherewastheabodeofpain.Asheapproachedthehousehewasstruckbytheunearthlysilence,andatfirsthethoughtitwasdeserted.ThenhesawAta.Shewassittingonherhaunchesinthelean-tothatservedheraskitchen,watchingsomemesscookinginapot.Nearherasmallboywasplayingsilentlyinthedirt.Shedidnotsmilewhenshesawhim.

           "IhavecometoseeStrickland,"hesaid.
