           AsStroevetoldmethishebecameasexcitedaswhentheincidentoccurred,andhetookholdofadinner-knifeonthetablebetweenus,andbrandishedit.Heliftedhisarmasthoughtostrike,andthen,openinghishand,letitfallwithaclattertotheground.Helookedatmewithatremuloussmile.Hedidnotspeak.

           "Fireaway,"Isaid.

           Ireallyfeltsomethingoftheemotionthathadcaughthim.Iwasstrangelyimpressed.ItwasasthoughIweresuddenlytransportedintoaworldinwhichthevalueswerechanged.Istoodby,ataloss,likeastrangerinalandwherethereactionsofmantofamiliarthingsarealldifferentfromthosehehasknown.
