           IfollowedthemrathersulkilytothetableatwhichStricklandalwayssat,andhecalledfortheboardandthechessmen.TheybothtookthesituationsomuchasamatterofcoursethatIfeltitabsurdtodootherwise.Mrs.Stroevewatchedthegamewithinscrutableface.Shewassilent,butshehadalwaysbeensilent.Ilookedathermouthforanexpressionthatcouldgivemeacluetowhatshefelt;Iwatchedhereyesforsometell-taleflash,somehintofdismayorbitterness;Iscannedherbrowforanypassinglinethatmightindicateasettlingemotion.Herfacewasamaskthattoldnothing.Herhandslayonherlapmotionless,oneintheotherlooselyclasped.IknewfromwhatIhadheardthatshewasawomanofviolentpassions;andthatinjuriousblowthatshehadgivenDirk,themanwhohadlovedhersodevotedly,betrayedasuddentemperandahorridcruelty.Shehadabandonedthesafeshelterofherhusband’sprotectionandthecomfortableeaseofawell-providedestablishmentforwhatshecouldnotbutseewasanextremehazard.Itshowedaneagernessforadventure,areadinessforthehand-to-mouth,whichthecareshetookofherhomeandherloveofgoodhousewiferymadenotalittleremarkable.Shemustbeawomanofcomplicatedcharacter,andtherewassomethingdramaticinthecontrastofthatwithherdemureappearance.
