           Hewastheconstantlover,andthoughshegrewold,losingherroundedlinesandherfaircomeliness,tohimshewouldcertainlyneveralter.Tohimshewouldalwaysbetheloveliestwomanintheworld.Therewasapleasinggraceintheorderlinessoftheirlives.Theyhadbutthestudio,abedroom,andatinykitchen.Mrs.Stroevedidallthehouseworkherself;andwhileDirkpaintedbadpictures,shewentmarketing,cookedtheluncheon,sewed,occupiedherselflikeabusyantalltheday;andintheeveningsatinthestudio,sewingagain,whileDirkplayedmusicwhichIamsurewasfarbeyondhercomprehension.Heplayedwithtaste,butwithmorefeelingthanwasalwaysjustified,andintohismusicpouredallhishonest,sentimental,exuberantsoul.

           Theirlifeinitsownwaywasanidyl,anditmanagedtoachieveasingularbeauty.TheabsurditythatclungtoeverythingconnectedwithDirkStroevegaveitacuriousnote,likeanunresolveddiscord,butmadeitsomehowmoremodern,morehuman;likearoughjokethrownintoaseriousscene,itheightenedthepoignancywhichallbeautyhas.
