           “Oh,Paul,itisyouwhoarechanged,”saidAnne.“YouhavegrowntoooldfortheRockPeople.Theylikeonlychildrenforplayfellows.IamafraidtheTwinSailorswillneveragaincometoyouinthepearly,enchantedboatwiththesailofmoonshine;andtheGoldenLadywillplaynomoreforyouonhergoldenharp.EvenNorawillnotmeetyoumuchlonger.Youmustpaythepenaltyofgrowing-up,Paul.Youmustleavefairylandbehindyou.”

           “Youtwotalkasmuchfoolishnessaseveryoudid,”saidoldMrs.Irving,half-indulgently,half-reprovingly.

           “Oh,no,wedon’t,”saidAnne,shakingherheadgravely.“Wearegettingvery,verywise,anditissuchapity.Weareneverhalfsointerestingwhenwehavelearnedthatlanguageisgivenustoenableustoconcealourthoughts.”

           “Butitisn’titisgivenustoexchangeourthoughts,”saidMrs.Irvingseriously.ShehadneverheardofTallyrandanddidnotunderstandepigrams.
