TheA.V.I.S.gaveafarewellpartyinhonorofAnneandGilbertoneeveningatthehomeofJosiePye,choosingthatplace,partlybecauseMr.Pye’shousewaslargeandconvenient,partlybecauseitwasstronglysuspectedthatthePyegirlswouldhavenothingtodowiththeaffairiftheirofferofthehouseforthepartywasnotaccepted.Itwasaverypleasantlittletime,forthePyegirlsweregracious,andsaidanddidnothingtomartheharmonyoftheoccasion—whichwasnotaccordingtotheirwont.Josiewasunusuallyamiable—somuchsothatsheevenremarkedcondescendinglytoAnne,
“Yournewdressisratherbecomingtoyou,Anne.Really,youlookALMOSTPRETTYinit.”
“Howkindofyoutosayso,”respondedAnne,withdancingeyes.Hersenseofhumorwasdeveloping,andthespeechesthatwouldhavehurtheratfourteenwerebecomingmerelyfoodforamusementnow.JosiesuspectedthatAnnewaslaughingatherbehindthosewickedeyes;butshecontentedherselfwithwhisperingtoGertie,astheywentdownstairs,thatAnneShirleywouldputonmoreairsthanevernowthatshewasgoingtocollege—you’dsee!
