ForthenextthreeweeksAnneandPriscillacontinuedtofeelasstrangersinastrangeland.Then,suddenly,everythingseemedtofallintofocus—Redmond,professors,classes,students,studies,socialdoings.Lifebecamehomogeneousagain,insteadofbeingmadeupofdetachedfragments.TheFreshmen,insteadofbeingacollectionofunrelatedindividuals,foundthemselvesaclass,withaclassspirit,aclassyell,classinterests,classantipathiesandclassambitions.Theywonthedayintheannual“ArtsRush”againsttheSophomores,andtherebygainedtherespectofalltheclasses,andanenormous,confidence-givingopinionofthemselves.ForthreeyearstheSophomoreshadwoninthe“rush”;thatthevictoryofthisyearperchedupontheFreshmen’sbannerwasattributedtothestrategicgeneralshipofGilbertBlythe,whomarshalledthecampaignandoriginatedcertainnewtactics,whichdemoralizedtheSophsandswepttheFreshmentotriumph.AsarewardofmerithewaselectedpresidentoftheFreshmanClass,apositionofhonorandresponsibility—fromaFreshpointofview,atleast—covetedbymany.Hewasalsoinvitedtojointhe“Lambs”—RedmondeseforLambaTheta—acomplimentrarelypaidtoaFreshman.AsapreparatoryinitiationordealhehadtoparadetheprincipalbusinessstreetsofKingsportforawholedaywearingasunbonnetandavoluminouskitchenapronofgaudilyfloweredcalico.Thishedidcheerfully,doffinghissunbonnetwithcourtlygracewhenhemetladiesofhisacquaintance.
