           Thenexteveningfoundthemtreadingresolutelytheherring-bonewalkthroughthetinygarden.TheAprilwindwasfillingthepinetreeswithitsroundelay,andthegrovewasalivewithrobinsgreat,plump,saucyfellows,struttingalongthepaths.Thegirlsrangrathertimidly,andwereadmittedbyagrimandancienthandmaiden.Thedooropeneddirectlyintoalargeliving-room,wherebyacheerylittlefiresattwootherladies,bothofwhomwerealsogrimandancient.Exceptthatonelookedtobeaboutseventyandtheotherfifty,thereseemedlittledifferencebetweenthem.Eachhadamazinglybig,light-blueeyesbehindsteel-rimmedspectacles;eachworeacapandagrayshawl;eachwasknittingwithouthasteandwithoutrest;eachrockedplacidlyandlookedatthegirlswithoutspeaking;andjustbehindeachsatalargewhitechinadog,withroundgreenspotsalloverit,agreennoseandgreenears.ThosedogscapturedAnne’sfancyonthespot;theyseemedlikethetwinguardiandeitiesofPatty’sPlace.

           Forafewminutesnobodyspoke.Thegirlsweretoonervoustofindwords,andneithertheancientladiesnorthechinadogsseemedconversationallyinclined.Anneglancedabouttheroom.Whatadearplaceitwas!Anotherdooropenedoutofitdirectlyintothepinegroveandtherobinscameboldlyupontheverystep.Thefloorwasspottedwithround,braidedmats,suchasMarillamadeatGreenGables,butwhichwereconsideredoutofdateeverywhereelse,eveninAvonlea.AndyetheretheywereonSpoffordAvenue!Abig,polishedgrandfather’sclocktickedloudlyandsolemnlyinacorner.
